Frequently

Asked Questions

  • What is an Exercise Physiologist?

Accredited Exercise Physiologists (AEPs) are university qualified allied health professionals. They are equipped with the knowledge and skills to design, deliver and evaluate safe and effective exercise interventions for people with acute, sub-acute or chronic medical conditions, injuries, or disabilities. All our Exercise Physiologists are accredited with Exercise and Sport Science Australia (ESSA).

  • How can an Exercise Physiologist help me?

Our AEPs are trained to design and deliver exercise for the prevention, management, and treatment of chronic health conditions as well as injury rehabilitation and general health. All programs will start with an initial assessment where one of our AEPs discuss your goals and assess what is appropriate for you. We will then collaborate with you to get you exercising safely, regularly, and more independently. Exercise has been proven to reduce the risk of cardiovascular disease, osteoporosis, diabetes, cancer and many more. Individuals who complete regular exercise see a strong correlation with their physical function, physical benefits, quality of life and reduced risk of all-cause mortality.

    Exercise can be used to manage and treat the following;

    • Diabetes
    • Obesity
    • Osteoarthritis
    • Osteoporosis
    • Mental health (such as depression, anxiety)
    • Cardiovascular diseases (hypertension, heart attack, coronary heart disease)
    • Neurological conditions (such as brain injuries, stroke, Parkinson’s, multiple sclerosis)
    • Aging (issues such as balance, falls risk & prevention of muscle and bone loss)
    • Musculoskeletal (such as acute & chronic injuries, pre/post-surgery rehab)
    • Cancer and related concerns
    • Respiratory conditions (asthma, COPD, pulmonary rehabilitation)
    • Pregnancy (pre and post-natal)

  • Do I need a referral?

No. You do not need a referral to attend the gym, anyone is welcome. However, a referral will be required if a third party is responsible for payment (e.g. DVA or worker’s compensation). If you have a referral, please bring it to your appointment so we have all the relevant information.

  • Do you take Enhanced Primary Care Plan or Chronic Disease Management Plan (Medicare) referrals?

Yes. If you have been referred under a care plan (Medicare) you will need to bring your referral and your Medicare card to your appointment. Please ensure that your referral has been addressed to MTM Rehabilitation Gym and is under the category of Exercise Physiology. Please note that you will be required to pay in full on the day and we will submit your claim for you. Medicare will reimburse most of the fee, however there will typically be a gap payment.

  • Do you take Department of Veteran Affairs (DVA) referrals?

Yes. To access Exercise Physiology services through DVA you will need a referral from your GP and must be a gold or white card holder. Please note that if you are a white card holder you will need to have a condition/s that can be treated with exercise. A referral to an Exercise Physiologist will typically last either 12 sessions or 1 year, whichever comes first. Clients can have as many treatment cycles as their GP decides are clinically necessary. Please note that DVA does not fund memberships or indefinite sessions for adherence.

  • Do you take worker’s compensation and motor vehicle accident cases?

Yes. To access Exercise Physiology services through your worker’s compensation or motor vehicle accident claim you will need a referral from your GP or treating specialist. We can request approval from your insurance company directly. You will need to provide us with the following information and will organise it for you. Please note that we need to have written approval PRIOR to your first appointment.

    • Insurance company
    • Claim number
    • Injury details

  • Do we take participants through the National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS)?

Yes. To access Exercise Physiology services with us through NDIS you must be either plan managed or self-managed. You do not need a referral, but you must have funding for our service in one of the categories below. Funding for Exercise Physiology can come from the following budget areas in a NDIS plan:

Speak with your support coordinator to see what your plan includes and to find out if you have funding for Exercise Physiology.

  • Can I access Exercise Physiology services through my Home Care Package (HCP)?

Yes. If your home care package includes funding for Exercise Physiology services, we can arrange to have your appointments paid by your provider directly. If you do not yet have a home care provider, you will need an assessment with an Aged Care Assessment Team (ACAT) first. Please note that we are not a mobile service, and all clients will need to attend the gym for their sessions. For us to deal directly with your provider, we will need the below information.
