We have a range of different options for Reformer Pilates here at MTM Physiotherapy and Rehabilitation Gym. We offer one-on-one, class, and independent Pilates options. Classes and one-on-one sessions are available with both our Exercise Physiologists and our Physiotherapists. You will need to have an assessment prior to commencing classes. Independent Pilates falls under a gym membership in our Rehabilitation Gym and can be set up for you by one of our Exercise Physiologists. See the Rehab Gym page for more information.
Reformer Pilates is a modified form of traditional Pilates that is specifically designed for individuals with various health conditions or those recovering from injuries. The benefits of Reformer Pilates include:
Improved Core Strength: Clinical Pilates places a strong emphasis on core strength and stability but also ensuring that the body is strong as a unit. The exercises often target the muscles of the abdomen, back, and pelvis to enhance core strength and support.
Enhanced Flexibility: Clinical Pilates incorporates strength through full range of motion, promoting joint mobility and health. Typically, we also incorporate stretching and mobility exercises to compliment the strength aspect. This can be particularly beneficial for individuals with musculoskeletal issues or those recovering from injuries.
Better Posture: While the research indicates that there is no one ‘perfect posture,’ Clinical Pilates can be beneficial for those who have postural concerns. The focus on strengthening through all planes of movement and postural control throughout can improve overall postural awareness and strength. This can be especially beneficial for individuals who spend long hours sitting or in sustained postures.
Pain Relief: Clinical Pilates exercises are often tailored to address specific areas of pain or discomfort. This can help alleviate pain associated with conditions such as back pain, neck pain, or joint issues. As it is easy to scale and modify depending on symptomology, Clinical Pilates can be a great ‘gateway’ into exercise for those dealing with acute or chronic pain.
Injury Rehabilitation: Our Exercise Physiologists and Physiotherapists use clinical Pilates as part of injury rehabilitation programs. The controlled and low-impact nature of the exercises makes it suitable for individuals recovering from various injuries.
Balance and Coordination: Clinical Pilates incorporates exercises that challenge balance and coordination. This can be particularly beneficial for older adults or individuals with neurological conditions, helping to improve stability, gait patterns, and reduce the risk of falls.
Individualised Approach: One of the key features of clinical Pilates is its adaptability to individual needs. Programs can be customised based on a person's specific health condition, fitness level, and goals, making it a versatile and personalised form of exercise.
Mind-Body Connection: Like traditional Pilates, Clinical Pilates emphasises the mind-body connection. Patients are encouraged to focus on breathing, concentration, and controlled movements, promoting mindfulness and stress reduction.
Safe and Low-Impact: Reformer Pilates is generally considered a safe and low-impact form of exercise. This makes it suitable for a wide range of individuals, including those with joint issues, older adults, and individuals recovering from surgery.
Long-Term Wellness: Regular practice of Reformer Pilates can contribute to long-term wellness by promoting overall strength, flexibility, and a healthy lifestyle. It can be a sustainable form of exercise that individuals can continue throughout their lives.
Before starting any exercise program, especially if you have pre-existing health conditions or concerns, it's important to consult with one of our Physiotherapists to ensure that Reformer Pilates is suitable for your individual needs. Additionally, working with a trained and experienced instructor can help ensure that the exercises are performed correctly and safely.
