Managing Lower Back Pain

Managing Lower Back Pain

Another alarming aspect is the direct and indirect costs of lower back pain on our economy. It has been estimated that the direct cost of lower back pain in Australia is around $1.9 billion per year. The estimated indirect costs in Australia stand at $9.17 billion per year.

Evidence suggests that the best long-term solution for chronic lower back pain is achieved through a combination of manual (hands on) therapy and exercise. Studies have also shown that patients with lower back pain have altered core muscle control, as well as over-active global muscle systems.

So if you have lower back pain, your muscles are not functioning in a way that allows your spine to move in a protected, stabilised manner. It is often helpful to engage in an intermediate form of exercise, such as Pilates, which will allow you to retain these core muscles and better protect your spine. Combining this activity with hands on therapy can deliver pleasing results for people suffering from chronic lower back pain.

It is important to remember that back pain is different for everyone and pain varies from person to person. The professionally trained Physiotherapists at MTM Physiotherapy Glengarry will take the time to assess your situation and determine the best possible course of action to resolve your back pain.
